The twin blades once wielded by Shadow Walker Jonelith Shadowborn are of unknown origin. What is known, however, is that Jonelith was somehow able to procure the double blades during his first assignment within the depths of Hellfire Citadel.
Over the duration of six months proceeding after the procurment by Jonelith of the Blades, Loremaster [char]Taliesen[/char] Anarie observed a distinct change in his student’s behavior:Aggression, Anxiety, Paranoia, and other emotional ailments. In time the personality changes within Jonelith became apparent, and [char]Taliesen[/char] was forced to intervene.
Through a course of unfortunate events, Jonelith lost control of his actions on numerous occasions within the halls of Forbbiden Lore and the Circle Alliance which eventually led to his dismissal from both the Alliance and his order.
The Loremaster secretly watched over his former student with hopes that he may unveil the source of the rogue’s questionable actions.Sadly, the source would not be found until Jonelith’s untimely death at the hand of his Master.
[char]Taliesen[/char] was summoned by his Lore Guard, having spotted Jonelith with Stranglethorn veil, where the young rouge had given in to his emotional duress and began a killing spree of the local goblin loggers within the area.
In the end, master and student faced off which resulted in [char]Taliesen[/char] Anarie rising as the victor.Jonelith’s body was buried with honors – paying tribute to the young Rogues contributions to the Lore before his aggressive tendencies took over.
Upon careful examination and testing of Jonelith’s gear – it was determined that the twin swords he had acquired were the direct source of his ailment. How Jonelith came into possession of the swords is unknown. It is believed the Loremaster, to this day, still searches for answers so that the one who possessed his student may be brought to justice.
There is a small inscription below the carefully placed blades:
“In life you were my student,
In Death I was yours.
Rest with our forefathers, Brother,
And know that righteous justice will prevail.
We remember you.”
~ [char]Taliesen[/char] Anarie
"From shadows I came, and to the shadows I will go. I am unseen, I am unknown, and I am the brother of Silence. Flee if you so desire, for none can escape the embrace of the veil, nor my blade." ~ Taliesen
This powerful weapon was finely crafted by the expert hands of the Ashen Verdict at the request of Highlord Darion Mograine of the Knights of the Ebon Blade. The concept of the weapon is a complex one: It would be the perfection of merging utter shadow with perfect light, creating a violent, twisted weapon which embodied the powers of both entities.
The secret of the weapon is it's potential: Darion had purposefully designed it to be the sister blade of Frostmourne itself. It too would have the power to harvest the souls of the dead to employ it's devastating power - power which was made evident in Frostmourne. Thus, once Shadowmourne reached it's full potential, would become equivalent in power.
The components of the blade were: Arthas Menethil's prized hammer (which was discarded upon the acquistion of Frostmourne) Light's Vengeance, the deadly, acidic bloods of the scourge monstrosities Rotface and Festergut, and 25 ingots of the foul, corrupted blood of the old god Yogg-Saron: Primordial Saronite. Once the parts were assembled, Darion forged it in the heart of a Runeforge, thus granting it the powers of a death knight's Runeblade. Once the husk, Shadow's Edge, was formed, it would need the full effects of each the three unholy powers of the scourge: Blood, Frost, and Unholy. Shadow's Edge was first submersed in Professor Putricide's unholy concoction of the foulest plague. Next, the axe tasted the blood of the Blood Queen Lana'thel, simultaneously with it's wielder who was temporarily transformed into a vampire. Finally, the weapon withstood the bone-shattering ice breath of Sindragosa, the Frostwyrm queen.
Once it had been infused with these unholy powers, the shards of Ner'zhul's frozen prison (Shadowfrost Shards) were gathered - 50 of them, to be exact - and the blade was imbued with these unholy crystals. Thus was born Shadowmourne.
The power of Frostmourne was evident, as aforementioned. It twisted the mind of it's wielder, whispering horrible thoughts into it's master's mind (then who was the true master?), driving him mad. The Lich King would have been an inkling before his might were he without Frostmourne. So it is with the wielder of Shadowmourne. Realizing the terrible power of the weapon, Darion knew that only the purest of heart would be able to wield it; anything less and the world would face another calamity.
To keep things in check, it was also recognized that multiple wielders of the weapon would trade off turns wielding it to keep any one person from being driven mad by it. Among those that wielded it were Maeltum Avelance of the Argent Crusade and Aalesia Xarin of Forbidden Lore. The blade would collect the souls of the fallen, tortured, and damned as it battled the scourge inside Icecrown Citadel, freeing them of the Lich King's grasp. With their hatred and call for justice, the blade carried the souls to the annihilation of the Lich King, allowing them wreak vengeance on their jailor.
Even with the Lich King dead, the weapon still existed, and it's terrible power needed to be dealt with. It was decided that it would be locked away into the vaults of history, and who better than the scholar warriors of Forbidden Lore to keep it and it's dark history safe?
Unfortunately, the weapon recently mysteriously vanished from the lore vault...
